Jonathan Glazer
Pretty Polly "Linda 2"
- DirectorJonathan Glazer
NICLAS LARSSON The second Glazer film is what we in advertising sometimes label as a “dog-food-ads”. This label is often given to the product, and the lack of creativity the product oozes. Yet for Glazer, this seems more like a challenge than something to be embarrassed by, because his film for Pretty Polly not only works as a piece of advertising, but also as a trailer for a movie. The tone is so wonderfully off that if that were in fact a film, it would probably be one of my favorite movies ever made.
A note from Niclas
A follow-up, on par with Budgen, is of course Jonathan Glazer. It’s hard not to be amazed by everything he does. Every frame is interesting, and he never ceases to impress me in his choices, even in his newer work like his recent work for Prada with Scarlett Johansson. I have, however, chosen two spots that I think are important not to overlook when we talk about Glazer’s legacy.
Pretty Polly
Jonathan Glazer's 1995 commercial for Pretty Polly hosiery, titled "Linda 2", is a notable example of his early work in advertising. The ad is part of a retrospective collection showcasing Glazer's innovative approach to commercial filmmaking. While specific behind-the-scenes interviews or detailed production insights for this particular spot are limited, Glazer's broader body of work offers context to his creative process. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and a penchant for blending surreal elements with everyday scenarios, Glazer's commercials often push the boundaries of conventional advertising. His early ads, including those for Pretty Polly, reflect a period where he was honing his distinctive visual style and narrative techniques.
