Anson Smart Derek is an New Zealand based photographer but is from New Zealand. I have been familiar with Derek’s fashion work over the years but feel like this project was more of a deep personal journey through Mercer and its surrounds a place were Derek was born and grew up. The images feel intimate and personal and you can sense the connection to place. A great mix of images that tell a story that we wouldn’t have known.

A Place Held in Memory

Published in 2009, Mercy Mercer is Derek Henderson's second monograph and a deeply personal photographic journey through Mercer, the small New Zealand town where his mother grew up. Bringing together more than 100 colour photographs, the book documents the landscapes, people and everyday moments found along the Waikato River.

Organised as both a visual record and a personal exploration, Mercy Mercer moves beyond documentary photography, revealing a place shaped by memory, history and quiet observation. Rather than presenting an idealised portrait of rural New Zealand, Henderson creates a nuanced account of a community where ordinary lives and overlooked places become the foundation for larger cultural stories.

The Photographer

Derek Henderson is one of New Zealand's most respected contemporary photographers, recognised for a practice that moves seamlessly between fine art, editorial and commercial photography. Having spent two decades living and working in London, Los Angeles and New York, he has photographed for publications including British Vogue, WSJ. Magazine, Arena Homme+ and i-D, while continuing to develop independent long-term projects centred on Australia and New Zealand. Working primarily with large-format film cameras, Henderson has become known for his restrained visual language, where careful composition, natural light and close observation transform familiar subjects into quietly powerful images. His photographs have been widely exhibited internationally and are held in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and Christchurch Art Gallery.

Following the Waikato River

At the centre of Mercy Mercer is the Waikato River, a landscape that carries both personal significance and broader cultural meaning. Travelling through the region with a large-format camera, Henderson photographs abandoned rural buildings, expansive river views, alternative communities, Māori teenagers, slaughterhouse workers, passing travellers, family members and fleeting moments from everyday life. Every subject is approached with the same level of attention, reflecting what has often been described as Henderson's "democratic naturalism", a way of seeing that refuses to rank one moment or person above another. Together, the photographs build a layered portrait of Mercer that feels intimate while also reflecting the wider character of New Zealand.

Stories Beneath the Surface

Although Henderson's photographs often appear understated at first glance, they reveal increasingly complex narratives the longer they are observed. Throughout Mercy Mercer, quiet scenes become subtle reflections on colonial history, immigration, poverty, environmental degradation and the effects of commerce on both landscape and community. Rather than illustrating these themes directly, Henderson allows them to emerge naturally through atmosphere, gesture and place. His images resist dramatic storytelling, instead inviting viewers to slow down and discover meaning within details that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

The Beauty of the Everyday

Working with large-format film allows Henderson to photograph with remarkable clarity and patience, giving equal importance to portraits, interiors, landscapes and still life. Influenced by photographers such as Joel Sternfeld and Stephen Shore, he combines documentary observation with a refined visual sensitivity that gives even modest scenes a sense of monumentality. Throughout the book, natural light, open space and carefully balanced compositions create photographs that feel calm and restrained, yet emotionally rich. Whether depicting a roadside building, a hydrangea, a family portrait or a stretch of river, Henderson approaches every image with the same measured precision and quiet curiosity.

An Enduring Portrait of New Zealand

More than a photographic survey of a single town, Mercy Mercer reflects Derek Henderson's enduring interest in memory, place and the overlooked moments that shape everyday life. The book demonstrates how documentary photography can move beyond simple observation to reveal deeper emotional, cultural and historical layers without relying on spectacle. By combining personal history with a thoughtful exploration of landscape and community, Mercy Mercer stands as one of Henderson's defining publications, offering a timeless portrait of New Zealand where the ordinary becomes unexpectedly profound.
